I’m no Christian, nor do I share their faith and beliefs. I’m actually not quite sure what to think of this:
Google has apparently turned down an advert campaign by a British Christian group. It appears the aim of this Christian Institute was to provide their views on abortion, a delicate topic in general.
The company turned down the non-denominational Christian charity which wanted to pay Google so that whenever the word “abortion” was typed in, its link would appear on the right hand side of the screen.
The link would have read: “UK abortion law - news and views on abortion from the Christian Institute. www.christian.org.uk.”
The group is now suing Google. One thing that made me side with Google is the fact that Google appears to have a policy of declining sites which mix the issue of abortion with religious views.
If I’d research the topic of abortion, I certainly wouldn’t want to end up on any Christian websites.
On the other hand, Google runs a lot of controversial campaigns including Porn and adult content. So if I’d research the female reproductive organs, I certainly wouldn’t want to end up on any Porn sites.
Anyway, I’m not bothered really. It could however be seen as online censorship and a threat to freedom of speech.
